With Google’s Nest home security camera devices now over four years old, it was time for a revamp, and that’s what they’re delivering. The new model also comes with a battery-operated doorbell which is super-easy to use and install. That’s no the only first though, with customers also able to purchase Nest floodlights, and an improved indoor Nest Cam.
Another interesting feature is the Nest Cam can now be used on a free tier, and although you don’t get all the features of a paid service, you can still use it for live streaming 24/7.
The new Nest Cam
One of the best things about the new Nest Cam is it’s Google’s first battery-powered indoor/outdoor security camera. It’s been tested for all weather conditions, so you can keep it out in the open with no concerns. Impressively, the new Nest Cam comes with on-device machine learning, which means it can differentiate between alerts. This means, in theory, no more alerts when the camera spots a tree branch blowing in the wind.
You also get built-in two-way communication, allowing you to communicate with people at the front door. Very helpful in a pandemic! The new Nest Cam also features an on-device recording of up to an hour in the event of a power or internet outage, so you’re still protected even when the power is out.
The Nest Doorbell
Google has never marketed a doorbell in Australia before, so it’s great to see there is now a choice for Google Home fanatics. The new doorbell is extremely easy to install, and it’s also battery-operated, so there’s no wiring to worry about. It’s more than just a doorbell though, as the built-in camera allows a 145-degree field of view. Recordings are captured in 960 resolution, and you can even zoom if you’re watching the action live.
Floodlight model
For Nest fans, you’ll be please to know there is now going to be a floodlight model available. Much like the Nest Cam, it uses intelligent learning rather than standard motion detection sensors. This is a great benefit for those who have suffered through floodlight models that flick on whenever a branch moves or a cat runs across the front yard.
Indoor Nest Cam
Finally, the indoor Nest Cam has received an upgrade, looking a lot sleeker and in line with the rest of the range. Featuring a permanent base, it’s small, modern and can fit almost anywhere!
