Running a large-scale dairy farm is always going to have significant running costs. But one family found a way to slash their irrigation expenses from around $10,000 per year down to just $15,000. They did this by investing in solar energy
With drought always being a threat, irrigation is essential to the survival of many regional farms. That was certainly the case for Clydebank dairy farmer Wilco Droppert and Sandra Jefford. Their farm has 300 cows, and during the last drought, they realised irrigation was costing around 12-14% of their entire budget. A necessary expense, of course, but one that could definitely be reduced.
Mr Droppert said that they became concerned about their high carbon footprint and significant irrigation expenses. Following an energy audit in 2018, the couple’s options were clear.
Solar-powered irrigation
Following a comprehensive audit of energy costs, the farmers decided to install 150kw of solar generation on their property. The power is used mostly to run a bore and operate two pumps that send water from damns to the irrigation pivots and paddocks.
The project had an initial budget of $1 million, but the couple received a grant from the government to help with costs. Although the investment is significant, the long-term benefits are easy to see.
Ms Jefford told ABC News that last summer, the irrigation costs were around $80,000. For their level of production, it just wasn’t viable. As they can access 90-95% of the solar power generated on their farm, they expect next year’s cost to be around $15,000. It’s a considerable saving that should repeat each year.
