More than 20% of Australian homes now have solar power and use it for their electricity or hot water, or both. Solar systems don’t need much day-to-day maintenance, but it’s important to have a check-over and a service at least once a year and here are the reasons why.
You’ll increase your panels’ efficiency
You installed your solar panels to reduce your dependency on the grid and to lower your power bills, right? You want to make consistent savings and to gather the same amount of power each week, month and year, right? The fact is that your panels won’t be able to collect as much sunlight as they did if they get dirty, so they need a clean-up once or twice a year.
It’s estimated that a build-up of grime, dirt, leaves and bird poo can reduce your panels’ ability to absorb sunlight by 20% or more. Your panels will also lose efficiency over time due to aging, of course, but this process is much slower; however, why add to this decline when a quick brush-up will bring them back into line?
Each panel will get an individual check-over
Your technician will look over each panel to make sure there’s no loose connections or voltage problems, as this can seriously hamper your output even when they’re all clean and bright.
You’ll catch small problems before they become big problems
If you know about – and fix – a problem early on, then you’re saving yourself money and trouble, as well as making sure that your system is functioning at its best for as much of the year as possible.
You’ll also be reducing the risk of fires – faulty inverters and wiring issues have led to several hundred fires in Australia in the last decade, so do everything you can to keep your system safe. There’s also the chance of water ingress and subsequent corrosion which can, at best, lead to a drop in productivity and at worst a fire. Your annual check will look out for signs of weather damage and so you’ll be able to replace the panel or connection in good time.
