Just a few short years ago, the bathroom light was a simple, bare-looking affair. You clunked it on with the pull-cord, usually setting off the noisy extractor fan, then performed your ablutions under its unidirectional, unflattering rays.
If you were a bit fancy, you might have had an array of lightbulbs running down the side of your vanity mirror…until they all blew, one by one, of course.
Well, times have moved on and we now have LED lighting – low running costs and up to 35,000 hours of light in a multitude of colours. So, let’s dive right in with some inspirational ideas for your bathroom.
Mood lighting
No more harsh and flat white light, period! With LED lights you can have white if you want, but why stop there? You can install strips of lights that change colour according to how you’re feeling. Tired and stressed at the end of the work day? Relax in a warm bath and a warm pink glow. Having trouble starting up in the mornings? No probs – set your lights to bright blue and your pineal gland can’t fail to respond.
Recessed lighting
Do away with your overhead halogens and install some LED strips along the intersection of floor and wall, around your sink or behind some shelves, or in some shelves, if they’re cut into the wall. You’ll still get lots of light, only this time it’ll be flattering…
Light up your shower
Some LED lights are specially made to withstand water and condensation, so they’re ideal for kitchens and bathrooms, especially shower cubicles. If you have a walk-in shower, why not bring some colour into it to really make it stand out?
Nice and dim
Another great feature of LED lights is that they’re easily dimmable, which can make for a relaxing bathtime for young children (and grown-ups). Alternatively, if you’re applying make-up or shaving (or both!), then you’ll need strong white light, which your LEDs will be only too pleased to deliver.
