As we watch the cost of electricity rising at quite an alarming rate, it is more important than ever to consider the efficiency of appliances when purchasing new, or replacing old ones.

Here are some tips from the team at Accord Electrical to consider:

  • Take a good look at how many fridges you have. We find a lot of people are paying for 2, 3 or even 4 fridges. Do you really need all that stuff cold all the time? It is certainly costing you a lot of money - especially if the fridges are old.
  • Choose appliances by looking at their energy rating. The more stars in the rating, the more you will save on your energy bills.
  • Choose low energy LCD or LED televisions instead of plasma.
  • Make sure the refrigerator has the correct temperature set on the thermostat and that it is positioned where air can circulate around. Get a thermometer and ensure the fridge is kept at 4 degrees.
  • Try to use the clothesline as often as possible, rather than the clothes dryer.
  • Turn off appliances at the power point when not in use. Appliances on standby can use 10% of your home's energy. You can purchase remote control swithces for those hard to reach power points.
  • Reduce air conditioning use - they are energy guzzlers. If you must use it, keep the temperature at 24 degrees,.
